Application Process:
Pre-requisite:
- Ph.D. or Ph.D. candidate in basic science or an M.D. with interest in Laboratory Medicine - Clinical Chemistry/Toxicology.
- Satisfactory completion of a minimum of 30 semester hours in undergraduate and/or graduate level chemistry or biochemistry courses prior to admission to the program. This meets one of the requirements for certification eligibility by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry.
Contact: Dr. Steven Wong at 414-805-6971 or e-mail – shwong@mcw.edu
Submit the following:
- An application letter, stating his/her statement of career goals
- Curriculum vitae
- Both undergraduate and graduate/medical school transcripts
- Three letters of recommendation
- Selected publications if available.
Application Deadline: September 15 for applicant(s) to start July 1 of the following year.
Interview: Above submitted information is reviewed by faculty members. Qualified candidates are selected and invited for interview.
On the day of interview: the candidate will meet with the directors, faculty, staff and current fellow(s). The candidate is required to present a research/educational seminar to pathology faculty, staff, residents and students rotating in the department.
Final evaluation: All interviewers use a standard evaluation form to rate the candidate. Final evaluation is made by consensus of the faculty and staff who interviewed the candidate. If the candidate is considered acceptable, an invitation letter is sent to the candidate signed by representatives of MCW Pathology and/or MCWAH (Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals) and MCMEO (Milwaukee County Medical Examiners' Office).
Start Date: Preferred start date is July 1 but ultimately depends on candidate availability,
funding and space. Ideally, two fellows will be in the program at all times with staggered start dates to maintain continuity.
Program Description:
Medical College of Wisconsin is an integral partner of the Milwaukee County Regional Medical Center , located approximately 15 minutes west of downtown Milwaukee. Other partners of MCRMC are Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital (FMLH) and Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Affiliations are also established with the Milwaukee County Medical Examiners' Office and Community Memorial Hospital of Menomonee Falls (a northwest suburb of Milwaukee). The postdoctoral fellowship program, initially founded in 1995 for Clinical and Forensic Toxicology and jointly sponsored by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiners' Office, was recently re-structured for Clinical Chemistry/Toxicology. The clinical rotation takes place in the clinical laboratories of Dynacare Milwaukee, jointly sponsored by Dynacare/LabCorp and FMLH. Currently, the re-structured program retains the Forensic toxicology rotation and has been steadily developing clinical research programs in molecular pathology – pharmacogenomics, pharmacoproteomics and proteomics. The program is supported by the Department of Pathology funds. These funds may be obtained from unrestricted grants from corporations that make reagents and equipments for use in medical laboratories.
The program is accredited by COMACC (The Commission on Accreditation in Clinical Chemistry). The goal of the program is to educate and train Ph.D. and/or M.D. scientists for careers where they will assume leadership roles in a hospital, reference or forensic laboratory setting or to function as a scientist/faculty member responsible for research, method development, management or clinical evaluation in an academic/research setting.
The duration of the program is two years. Clinical chemistry postdoctoral fellows interact with the pathology residents on a daily basis. Blocks of time are spent at the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin and the Milwaukee County Medical Examiners' Office. Early in the program, the fellow is acclimated to the clinical laboratory in preparation for assisting in clinical projects and on-call responsibilities for the laboratory. Then formal rotations would include: clinical chemistry, clinical toxicology and therapeutic drug management, forensic toxicology, and molecular pathology/diagnostics. Fellows become involved in research projects during some of these rotations, either by participating in established project or by creating their own. A major focus of established clinical research is the molecular pathology – pharmacogenomics, pharmacoproteomics and proteomics. Additionally, fellows participate in and attend weekly seminars in the Department of Pathology and other venues. Externship may be available with sponsoring corporations. |
